Denver's Housing Crisis, our Need for Parks and Ballot Measure 20 - Denver Residents Decide on the Future of the Park Hill Golf Course
The Park Hill Golf Course is a privately owned, 155 acre under-performing golf course located in Northeast Park Hill, a predominantly black neighborhood that has experienced decades of disinvestment and a legacy of exclusion. The community broadly supports uses other than a golf course, like affordable housing, parks and open space, a grocery store and walkable places. The resulting Small Area Plan (SAP), led by the City and with community outreach, lays out a vision for the future redevelopment of the property as an equitable community. In alignment with the SAP vision, the property owner received rezoning approval by Denver's City Council for development of a mixed use neighboorhood with 100+ acres of parks and open space and at least 25% of residential units as for-rent and for-sale income restricted homes. An underlying Conservation Easement requires agreement between both the City and Property Owner to release the easement. In 2022, Save our Open Space (SOS) led a successful ballot initiative that requires any modification of the Conservation Easement to be decided through a citywide vote. Consequently, measure 20 will be on ballots in the April 2023 Municipal elections. Denver is experiencing a housing crisis while also needing more parks and open space.
