About this event
A successful public health approach to suicide prevention calls for community-partnered interventions and a focus on secure firearm storage messaging and practices (aka Lethal Means Safety). Prior research has demonstrated that temporary, voluntary storage of firearms outside the home is the preferred LMS practice during a suicidal crisis and is acceptable to many firearm owners. Previous efforts have led to the successful development of state-wide and national firearm storage maps; however, these initiatives have faced key challenges to tracking implementation fidelity and measuring outcomes. This presentation describes the collaboration between Department of Veterans Affairs researchers and 3 Veteran-owned firearm retailers to develop and pilot The Armory Project, a program to promote secure firearm storage messaging and provide temporary, out-of-home storage in Louisiana. Findings from the pilot phase on feasibility, fidelity of implementation, acceptability, and effectiveness will be presented.
