This exhibition highlights the commitment of contemporary artists who have dedicated their work to unraveling the multifaceted layers of the sports world. The exhibition delves into the artistic exploration of sports equipment, setting itself apart from other exhibitions centered around the theme of sports. Through their use of sports materials, these artists explore a range of concepts including consumerism, the environment, gender, race, religion, and self-expression. The exhibition serves as both a celebration and a critique of the intersection between sports and art, inviting viewers to reflect on the profound connections between these two realms.






 



The exhibition Sport and Spectator will shift our collective perspectives and preconceived notions of the role and impact of sports in our daily lives by presenting new or discarded sports equipment and paraphernalia as art objects. By highlighting sports equipment outside of its primary use, this exhibition encourages broader discussions about the integral role of sports in our culture. Sport and Spectator will raise our collective awareness of the influence of sports on our society, art, environment, the way we perceive our physical bodies, and consumerism.   


 


Sport and Spectator features contemporary artists who utilize discarded or new sports equipment and paraphernalia to create singular works of art that touch on a wide range of societal issues directly or indirectly influenced by sports to prod and unravel the complex layers of the sports world. The exhibition serves as both a celebration and a critique of the intersection between sports and art, inviting viewers to reflect on the connection between sports and other areas of society and our lives.  


 


Featured artists transform commercially manufactured sporting goods utilizing craftworking techniques and materials. Works such as Jeffrey Gibson's beaded punching bags, Sophie Inard's crocheted equipment, and Esmaa Mohamoud's basketball jersey ballgowns intertwine and incorporate traditional and handcrafts, cultural traditions, and couture fabrication with discarded, damaged, and repurposed sporting goods. Juxtaposing seemingly unrelated materials and concepts that draw from unrelated resources prompts the viewer to question preconceived ideas about sporting goods and their relation to and impact on their environment.  


 


Other artists utilize sports iconography to alter the materiality and meaning of objects. For example, Brian Jungen disassembles sports jerseys and celebrity sneakers—products coveted for their associations with famous athletes. Jungen reassembles the fabric, leather, foam, and rubber to resemble the Indigenous craft of British Columbian coastal tribes. Jungen's work suggests parallels between the cultural rituals surrounding sports and indigenous ceremonies, emphasizing the commodification of each. Born in Fort St. John, British Columbia, Jungen grew up ranching and hunting on his family's Canadian homestead. Jungen shares his mother's Dane-Zaa heritage, which is that of First Nations people from the Peace River area of British Columbia and Alberta. Indigenous politics and culture inform Jungen's work and apply techniques based on recycling, reusing, and repurposing commercially manufactured products. 


 


With Sport and Spectator the McNay will join just a few other National museums to present exhibitions on the intersection of sport and the visual arts, Design for Sport (MoMA, 1962), Sports in Art (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1980), Andy Warhol: The Athletes (San Antonio Museum of Art, 2014), Hard Targets: Sports and Masculinity Explored in Art (Wexner Center for the Art, 2010), and Resistance Training (Michigan State University Broad Art Museum, 2023), and Get in the Game (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 2024) to name a few. While previous exhibitions focused on sports in broader, more traditional terms, Sport and Spectator will be singular in its presentation of art made from discarded or new sports equipment, materials, and ephemera.

Plants sustained our ancestors and they continue to sustain us—through food, medicine, clothing, housing, to providing the very oxygen we breathe. Every plant is sacred and we could not survive without them. Plantcestors depicts the portraits of artists, activists, and culture workers based in Yanaguana / San Antonio, TX that bring inspiration to the community through their art, leadership, and social justice work.


Within each painted portrait are natural plant materials that the person is connected to. The plants hold meaning based on ancestral connections, childhood memories, cultural roots, or lessons that they bring. Some enjoy the plants in their gardens, herbal practices, spirituality, as food, or for their beauty alone.


The process of creating these works includes photography, discussion, gardening, foraging, pressing, dehydrating, gluing, resining, and painting. The figures sit on the surface, in the present. Their Plantcestors are behind them but remain a part of them.


Surrounding the portraits are plant studies with materials foraged or nurtured by the artist. With both actual and painted plant elements, she references cycles of life and death, preservation and decay.

Moonment: Finding A Way features new site-specific, kinetic installations by Sizhu Li and continues her exploration of aluminum as a sculptural and poetic form. The namesake installation Moonment consisting of three-waves and a metaphorical heart was first developed by the artist in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time Sizhu reflected upon the poem Gazing at the Moon, Longing from Afar by Tang Dynasty poet and politician Zhang Jiuling

A rare talent who has garnered mass appeal at a young age, Taylor Tomlinson has continued to receive praise from fans and critics alike, with Rolling Stone commending her for "conquering comedy" and CNN welcoming "the era of Taylor Tomlinson." Variety recently honored her with their Creative Impact in Comedy Award, which follows her inclusion in their "10 Comics to Watch" and "Comedy Impact Report." She has also been inducted into Forbes 30 Under 30 and TIME100 Next, in addition to being named one of the "100 Most Powerful Women in Hollywood" by The Hollywood Reporter. The celebrated comedian is coming off headlining the seventh highest-grossing comedy tour of 2023, remarkably the only woman to break into the Top 10. She has released three hour-long specials for Netflix: Quarter-Life Crisis (2020), Look At You (2022), and Have It All (2024), the latter having debuted at #1. Tomlinson is notably the only female late-night host on network television and the youngest by two decades following the outrageously funny debut of After Midnight on CBS, currently airing weekdays at 12:37AM ET/PT.

Taylor Tomlinson: Save Me Tour




Fifty-three years ago, McNay Art Museum mounted Michael Tracy’s first-ever museum exhibition, “Seven Gold Paintings,” at what was then the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute. Next spring, the McNay will honor Tracy’s enduring artistic legacy with the last exhibition with which the artist was directly involved before his passing on June 15 at age 80.






“Michael Tracy: The Elegy of Distance”, on view March 1-July 27, 2025, surveys approximately two decades of Tracy’s career and debuts many never-before-seen paintings, sculptures and mixed-media objects from the artist’s personal holdings alongside artworks on loan from other collections. Together, the works promote critical thinking, empathy, thoughtful exchange and healing as viewers consider faith, ritual, immigration and the environment. An original soundscape by musical composer Omar Zubair will complement the works. The exhibition is organized by René Paul Barilleaux, the McNay’s head of curatorial affairs, in collaboration with Christopher Rincón, president of the Michael Tracy Foundation and director of the River Pierce Foundation.

In celebration of civil rights trailblazer Dolores Huerta's 95th birthday (born April 10, 1930), MACRI presents ¡SÍ, SE PUEDE! an exhibit of student art inspired by the life and work of Dolores Huerta. The exhibit features selected works created by Bexar County middle and high school students. Congratulations to all of our talented young artists!

The exhibit will be on display from Monday, March 3rd to Friday, April 18th, 2025, at MACRI's Visitor Center, 2123 Buena Vista Street, San Antonio, Texas 78207. The exhibit gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10 AM - NOON and 1 - 4 PM, or by appointment.

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s Teatro Salon is thrilled to announce that playwright Irene Chavez’s powerful script, “Las Comadres de Morales Street,” has been chosen for its next theater production. Ms. Chavez’ script was selected from the Teatro Salon Table Reading Series that was presented this past fall.
“Las Comadres de Morales Street” delves deep into the heart of the westside community of San Antonio, exploring the triumphs and challenges faced by its residents. This powerful play addresses themes of companionship, familial strength, and the profound impacts of Covid, gentrification, and disinvestment on the community. Audiences can expect an emotional journey that resonates with real-life experiences while highlighting the resilience and spirit of the people.

Confluence Park is our award-winning oasis where sustainability, art, and architecture come together in a harmonious blend of innovation and beauty. During our Ecology and Nature tour you'll explore innovative designs, eco-friendly structures, and stunning artworks that harmonize with nature. Tours are scheduled every fourth Saturday of the month with our Master Naturalist Docent, Bob Morris.

During the tour, you'll learn about the story of sustainability, focusing on the essential roles of water, soil, and air—three fundamental renewable natural resources that are crucial for all life on Earth. Confluence Park was built by forming a partnership between Nature and Architecture. These two attributes were melded into one to create a Vision of Sustainability for every visitor that comes here and provide a tangible benefit to all that reside in the SA River Basin.

Please note, the tour may be canceled if no reservations are made by the day prior. Each tour will last between 1.5 to 2 hours, and participants are welcome to join or leave as needed to accommodate different attention spans or ages. The pathways are accessible to all mobility levels, and bathrooms and water fountains are available on-site. We encourage you to bring a water bottle and sun protection.

Confluence Park Ecology and Nature Tour - Every 4th Sat of the Month 2025

Ruby City proudly presents Synthesis & Subversion Redux [https://rubycity.org/exhibitions/synthesis-subversion-redux/], an exhibition celebrating the legacy of Frances Jean Colpitt and the evolving conversation around Latinx art. This new exhibition revisits Colpitt’s groundbreaking 1996 show, Synthesis and Subversion: A Latino Direction in San Antonio Art, and its influence on contemporary art practices today.


n her original exhibition, Colpitt explored how Latinx artists could synthesize personal and cultural experiences with conceptual art practices. The artists featured in Redux honor this foundation while addressing contemporary issues like gender, migration, and bicultural identity. Their works embody hybridity and intersectionality, using materials such as textiles and clothing to weave together stories of resilience, family, and heritage. 


This new iteration also reflects a significant societal shift. In the 1990s, the art world often overlooked artists working outside mainstream contemporary discourse. Today, these historically marginalized practices are embraced as central to the broader narrative of contemporary art, celebrated for their ability to challenge conventions, elevate diverse voices, and offer fresh perspectives on identity and cultural heritage. 


Featured Artists include: Juan Carlos Escobedo, Jenelle Esparza, Bárbara Miñarro, Angeles Salinas, and José Villalobos 


The opening reception [https://rubycity.org/events/], which will feature an exhibition walkthrough with both Gonzalez and co-curator, Lopez, will take place on Saturday, February 14 from 2-3PM with a reception following from 3-5PM. The event is free and open to the public.


The exhibition will be on view from February 15, 2024 through September 28, 2025 at Studio, located inside Chris Park. Studio is open Thursday - Sunday from 10am - 6pm. It is closed Monday -Wednesday.

Synthesis & Subversion Redux

Envisioning the Hindu Divine: Expanding Darshan and Manjari Sharma features forty historical objects from India and Southeast Asia and nine photographs by global contemporary artist Manjari Sharma. Bringing together the striking work of the rising contemporary art star with the historic collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art, this exhibition showcases nine of the most significant deities of the Hindu pantheon and their contemporary relevance in art and faith. These works serve as a gateway to the concept of darshan—seeing and being seen by the divine—a profound spiritual exchange of glances experienced through consecrated images of gods. The vibrant, varied, and sometimes contradictory stories of these gods—as well as their familial relationships with each other—are shared through the works in this exhibition. 


 


Contemporary artist Manjari Sharma makes work that is rooted in portraiture and addresses issues of identity, multiculturalism, and personal mythology. Beginning as a multiyear, crowdfunded project on Kickstarter, Sharma’s Darshan series of photographs aimed to recreate the experience of encountering the nine Hindu deities. An extraordinary aspect of Sharma’s work is her commitment to creating each scene without digital manipulation. All items visible in the images were present when photographed, not digitally added later.
