What does poetry have to do with science? The two might seem fundamentally dissimilar, belonging to different realms, but both offer opportunities to look carefully, communicate observations, make connections, and present perspectives that help us understand the world more fully - piece by piece, experience by experience. Drs. Christy Tidwell and Matthew Whitehead, faculty members in the South Dakota Mines Department of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, explore these similarities and more for National Poetry Month. They will discuss the role of creativity in the sciences, introduce some poetry basics, share short poems that explore scientific topics, and lead an activity for audience members to create their own poems.

Be spellbound by the iconic variations, stunning choreography by Lev Ivanov after Marius Petipa, and the graceful movements of the world-renown State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine under the Artistic Direction of Andrei Litvinov. Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Classical Arts Entertainment, this production features brand new lavish sets, hand-painted scenery, and exquisite costumes designed by the most talented artists of Ukraine. 


The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet in a prologue and three acts, composed by Tchaikovsky in 1889. It is Tchaikovsky's second ballet, and his second-longest work at 160 minutes.
The story follows the classic fairytale of Princess Aurora, who is cursed by the evil fairy Carabosse to prick her finger on a spindle and die on her 16th birthday. The good fairy, the Lilac Fairy, is able to modify the curse so that instead of dying, Aurora will fall into a deep sleep for 100 years until awakened by the kiss of a prince.


After the prologue introducing the curse, the story follows Aurora growing up, celebrating her 16th birthday, pricking her finger, and falling into the 100-year slumber. In the final act, Prince Desire is led by the Lilac Fairy to Aurora's castle, where he finds her and awakens her with a kiss, breaking the curse. The ballet ends with a grand wedding celebration.

Ring in the Spring with A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Matthews. In William Shakespeare’s classic comedy, residents of Athens mix with fairies from a local forest, with absurd results. Theseus, Duke of Athens, is to marry Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. In hopes of staging a play for the wedding celebration, Bottom the Weaver and his friends rehearse in the woods with results that can only be described as hopelessly ridiculous.


Meanwhile, four young lovers are in a romantic tangle. Lysander and Demetrius love Hermia; she loves Lysander and her friend Helena loves Demetrius. Hermia’s father, Egeus, commands Hermia to marry Demetrius. All four young people end up in the woods where the fairy Puck, who serves the fairy king Oberon, puts a spell on Lysander, and then Demetrius, unintentionally causing both to love Helena. Oberon, who is quarreling with his wife, Titania, uses the same magic on her, causing her to fall in love with Bottom, who now, thanks to Puck, wears an ass’s head.

Marty Two Bulls Jr., Oglala Sioux Tribe Lakota Artist Laureate and educator, will share his unique perspective from his time as the 2024 Artist-In-Residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead. Two Bulls will talk about his experience 4,850 feet underground and the artwork he created for his recent exhibition Inyan Wakan (“holy rock” in Lakota), which explores the parallels at SURF: miners extracting minerals in the past to scientists extracting knowledge today. He will discuss the connections between art, science, and history as well as their importance in our society.

and Night Ranger at Outlaw Square



Outlaw Square is happy to present the Summer Kickoff in the Square Concert Weekend, featuring free concerts from country music star Ned LeDoux on Friday, May 23, and rock legends Night Ranger on Saturday, May 24. Both acts will hit the Sue Lundberg Memorial Stage at 8:00 p.m.
 
This third annual event is free of charge to all guests and will officially kick off the summer season at the picturesque Outlaw Square in the heart of downtown Deadwood.


Friday night's headliner Ned LeDoux, the singer-songwriter and son of country legend Chris LeDoux, has built a career honoring his forebears while still forging his own path. LeDoux, who has been releasing solo music since 2017 but has been a touring musician since his teenage years, has infused all of his records with realistic stories of life as a cowboy, his relationship with music royalty, and the pain and joy that infuses his work.

His first record, Sagebrush, features rock-tinged country jams, built around LeDoux’s approachable delivery and inimitable ability to turn a memorable phrase. Next in Line, released in 2019, proved its title prophetic, introducing LeDoux to a wider audience than ever before. With 2022’s sterling Buckskin, he introduced the renegade spirit of 70s outlaw country into his sound, cooking up simmering jams indebted to his experiences as a ranch hand. On his latest album, touchingly titled Safe Haven (out April 4, 2025) after the tragic loss of his daughter, he uses the memories of those he has lost to help him carry on with joy, celebration, and a faith that they are guiding his work. There’s a tribute to his late father in the form of “One Hand in the Riggin’, which magically features Ned singing along with a vocal performance his dad tracked 20 years ago. Safe Haven is far and away the artistic statements LeDoux has always wanted to make. “My songwriting maturity is more confident than it’s ever been before,” he explains before adding that his fans will still recognize some of his signature style. “There's also some stuff on here that relates very well with what I've done already, because it’s familiar and comfortable.” Safe Haven is an intoxicating blend of risk-taking, bold songwriting, and songs that find LeDoux in his familiar, comfortable territory. Both sides of the coin are equally worthy pursuits, one a reminder of where he’s been, and one an assurance that the path forward is still worth exploring.

During the summer months join a park ranger in the park's outdoor amphitheater for an inspirational 45-minute program focusing on the presidents, patriotism and the nation's history. Beginning with a ranger talk, this program continues with the film "Freedom: America's Lasting Legacy" (captioned) and culminates with the lighting of the memorial. Program held nightly late May through the end of September.
