Ruby City proudly presents Synthesis & Subversion Redux [https://rubycity.org/exhibitions/synthesis-subversion-redux/], an exhibition celebrating the legacy of Frances Jean Colpitt and the evolving conversation around Latinx art. This new exhibition revisits Colpitt’s groundbreaking 1996 show, Synthesis and Subversion: A Latino Direction in San Antonio Art, and its influence on contemporary art practices today.


n her original exhibition, Colpitt explored how Latinx artists could synthesize personal and cultural experiences with conceptual art practices. The artists featured in Redux honor this foundation while addressing contemporary issues like gender, migration, and bicultural identity. Their works embody hybridity and intersectionality, using materials such as textiles and clothing to weave together stories of resilience, family, and heritage. 


This new iteration also reflects a significant societal shift. In the 1990s, the art world often overlooked artists working outside mainstream contemporary discourse. Today, these historically marginalized practices are embraced as central to the broader narrative of contemporary art, celebrated for their ability to challenge conventions, elevate diverse voices, and offer fresh perspectives on identity and cultural heritage. 


Featured Artists include: Juan Carlos Escobedo, Jenelle Esparza, Bárbara Miñarro, Angeles Salinas, and José Villalobos 


The opening reception [https://rubycity.org/events/], which will feature an exhibition walkthrough with both Gonzalez and co-curator, Lopez, will take place on Saturday, February 14 from 2-3PM with a reception following from 3-5PM. The event is free and open to the public.


The exhibition will be on view from February 15, 2024 through September 28, 2025 at Studio, located inside Chris Park. Studio is open Thursday - Sunday from 10am - 6pm. It is closed Monday -Wednesday.

Synthesis & Subversion Redux

Envisioning the Hindu Divine: Expanding Darshan and Manjari Sharma features forty historical objects from India and Southeast Asia and nine photographs by global contemporary artist Manjari Sharma. Bringing together the striking work of the rising contemporary art star with the historic collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art, this exhibition showcases nine of the most significant deities of the Hindu pantheon and their contemporary relevance in art and faith. These works serve as a gateway to the concept of darshan—seeing and being seen by the divine—a profound spiritual exchange of glances experienced through consecrated images of gods. The vibrant, varied, and sometimes contradictory stories of these gods—as well as their familial relationships with each other—are shared through the works in this exhibition. 


 


Contemporary artist Manjari Sharma makes work that is rooted in portraiture and addresses issues of identity, multiculturalism, and personal mythology. Beginning as a multiyear, crowdfunded project on Kickstarter, Sharma’s Darshan series of photographs aimed to recreate the experience of encountering the nine Hindu deities. An extraordinary aspect of Sharma’s work is her commitment to creating each scene without digital manipulation. All items visible in the images were present when photographed, not digitally added later. Bubble Planet: An Immersive Experience is a multisensory experience where visitors will travel through fantastical, interactive landscapes and explore imaginary metaverses filled with unique optical illusions and stunning photo opportunities. Moving between ten uniquely themed rooms including the world’s largest bubble bath ball pit, a virtual reality room, an undersea LED room and an endless infinity experience, guests will embark on a journey created to connect with countless emotions and sensations and marvel at breath-taking concepts. This time of year, the snow melt leaves streams that run into Canyon Lake and the outcome is a beautiful sight to see. Our experienced tour guides will show you sides of Canyon Lake even some of the locals haven't navigated. This is an easy, beautiful paddle down inside the non-motorized boat area of Canyon Lake, the best lake in Arizona.
Tour starts at 10:30 a.m. Book online and show up at least 30 minutes prior to your reservation.

“Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection, 1980–2010” showcases a partnership between ASU’s Hispanic Research Center (HRC) and ASU Art Museum and brings together works from the 1980s into the 2010s drawn from the HRC’s dynamic collection. Featuring over 30 artists who each offer a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the Mexican American experience, this year-long exhibition pays homage to the ideals of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 70s and expands upon them through the widely disseminated medium of prints. Presented in two parts, this unique exhibition underscores how Chicano/a/x artists have employed prints and graphics to build community, engage with social concerns, and interrogate shifting notions of political and cultural identity over time.

“Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection, 1980–2010” is organized by ASUAM Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and ASUAM Curator Brittany Corrales and is made possible by funding provided by the Evelyn Smith Exhibition Fund. Additional funding is provided by ASU’s Hispanic Research Center and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with a Community of Practice composed of Carla Chavarria, Community Building Director, Iconico, and Carla León Celaya, PhD candidate in the Spanish Department at the School of International Letters and Cultures, ASU.

All are welcome to visit Verde Canyon Railroad depot for Raptors at the Rails, an educational presentation on the patio on select dates 11:00am-12:45pm. This free event prior to the train’s 1:00 pm departure features close-up glimpses of Arizona raptors such as eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, falcons and kestrels, amazing residents of Liberty Wildlife’s educational program. During the summer months, Liberty shares cold-blooded creatures such as tortoises, lizards and snakes during "Reptiles at the Rails".

The Buy Black Marketplace by Archwood Exchange

Throughout his dynamic and multidisciplinary practice, José Villalobos (b.1988, El Paso, Texas) interrogates and deconstructs aspects of gender and masculinity found within the U.S. / Mexico borderlands. His practice underscores the rigid and conservative patriarchal roots of his Evangelical Mexican upbringing merged with the cultural mores of West Texas, bringing to bear how these are often at odds with his own identity as a queer, Brown man. How do you see masculinity represented in your culture?


“Rough Rider” marks the first U.S. solo museum presentation for the artist. It presents a diverse collection of newly created works from the artist’s residency with CALA Alliance in the Fall of 2024. The exhibition focuses on the spectacle of rodeo culture, addressing themes related to machismo, protection and gender. Practice barrels, ropes and flanks, all of which exude preconceived ideas of masculinity, are reinterpreted with a distinct flashiness to assert a tension between what it means to be masculine. Taken as a whole, “Rough Rider” asks us to consider how we exist within the parameters of socially constructed norms and those that endure outside of them.


“José Villalobos: Rough Rider” is organized by ASU Art Museum Senior Curator Alana Hernandez, with ASU Art Museum Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and is made possible with generous funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art.
