Ruby City proudly presents Synthesis & Subversion Redux [https://rubycity.org/exhibitions/synthesis-subversion-redux/], an exhibition celebrating the legacy of Frances Jean Colpitt and the evolving conversation around Latinx art. This new exhibition revisits Colpitt’s groundbreaking 1996 show, Synthesis and Subversion: A Latino Direction in San Antonio Art, and its influence on contemporary art practices today.


n her original exhibition, Colpitt explored how Latinx artists could synthesize personal and cultural experiences with conceptual art practices. The artists featured in Redux honor this foundation while addressing contemporary issues like gender, migration, and bicultural identity. Their works embody hybridity and intersectionality, using materials such as textiles and clothing to weave together stories of resilience, family, and heritage. 


This new iteration also reflects a significant societal shift. In the 1990s, the art world often overlooked artists working outside mainstream contemporary discourse. Today, these historically marginalized practices are embraced as central to the broader narrative of contemporary art, celebrated for their ability to challenge conventions, elevate diverse voices, and offer fresh perspectives on identity and cultural heritage. 


Featured Artists include: Juan Carlos Escobedo, Jenelle Esparza, Bárbara Miñarro, Angeles Salinas, and José Villalobos 


The opening reception [https://rubycity.org/events/], which will feature an exhibition walkthrough with both Gonzalez and co-curator, Lopez, will take place on Saturday, February 14 from 2-3PM with a reception following from 3-5PM. The event is free and open to the public.


The exhibition will be on view from February 15, 2024 through September 28, 2025 at Studio, located inside Chris Park. Studio is open Thursday - Sunday from 10am - 6pm. It is closed Monday -Wednesday.

Bubble Planet: An Immersive Experience is a multisensory experience where visitors will travel through fantastical, interactive landscapes and explore imaginary metaverses filled with unique optical illusions and stunning photo opportunities. “Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection, 1980–2010” showcases a partnership between ASU’s Hispanic Research Center (HRC) and ASU Art Museum and brings together works from the 1980s into the 2010s drawn from the HRC’s dynamic collection. Featuring over 30 artists who each offer a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the Mexican American experience, this year-long exhibition pays homage to the ideals of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 70s and expands upon them through the widely disseminated medium of prints. Presented in two parts, this unique exhibition underscores how Chicano/a/x artists have employed prints and graphics to build community, engage with social concerns, and interrogate shifting notions of political and cultural identity over time.

Additional funding is provided by ASU’s Hispanic Research Center and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. First on stage - Dennis Herrera Blues Band taking the stage playing a collection of songs from his (4) CDs and most recently released in Oct. 2024 'FOUR'. The Bluesmen professional musicians play traditional, Texas, West Coast, Chicago, and Juke joint. Music compares to Jimmy Vaughan, Albert Collins, T-Bone Walker, and Jimmy Reed. After a brief break, Chicago Bob and The Blues Squad will be playing some original songs. They typify the quintessential sound and style of a traditional harmonica-based, post-World War II blues band. This free Asian event is a smaller version of our other events. This night market will showcase local food vendors and a variety of anime/retail vendors at this Asian food festival. This food festival is about highlighting the diversity of food and an opportunity for small businesses to show their culture through their food.

We highly encourage carpooling and rideshare. Parking is free. Most vendors will accept both cash and card. We do recommend bringing cash for this event. You can buy food to go.

Cultural Coalition will host First Friday Open Gallery Nights at its new Mask Alive Art Collection Gallery beginning February 7 through May 2 at Arizona Center in Downtown Phoenix.


The gallery showcases the unique artistic vision of Zarco Guerrero, a renowned artist, storyteller, and master sculptor. Featuring over 200 captivating works of art that span Guerrero's 50 year career, it is a colorful, joyful, and immersive cultural experience. Visitors will feel the transformative power of the mask as they explore the gallery full of over-sized 10-foot puppets, a quetzalcoatl performance art piece, bronze sculptures, upcycled mandalas, and over 100 different carved and sculpted masks.


"It is a dream come true to unveil the Mask Alive Art Collection Gallery and share the incredible artistry of Zarco Guerrero with the Phoenix community," said Carmen Guerrero, Cultural Coalition Executive Director. "Made possible thanks to Arizona Center, the space will also serve as a community hub as a legacy to the power of art to inspire, educate, and connect us to diverse cultures, traditions, and to each other."


The First Friday Open Gallery Nights will include:


Art Exhibition: Guests will have the opportunity to explore the Mask Alive Art Collection Gallery

Demonstrations: Artist demonstrations and live art

Family Activities: Visitors of all ages can make their own masks inspired by the creations of the artist

Shopping: Artwork by Zarco, Carmen, and other artists will be available for purchase in the gallery


For Zarco, this gallery is a continuation of his desire to connect culture and community, “This retrospective of my art represents a culmination of over 50 years of mask making work we’ve done with various ballet folklórico, mariachi, theater groups, and performance artists to take art into our communities. To ensure that art thrives! It lives! And we’re in this space to keep making that happen.”


Beginning in February, the Mask Alive space will offer visitor hours and First & Third Friday activations available for free to the public. Performances and artist workshops will also be available throughout the month, starting with beading and masking making, now open for registration.
